Yuma, Arizona - On Tuesday, shortly before 10:30 am, a fire was reported in the 1700 block of South 29th Drive. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the eaves of 1788 S. 29th Drive. An interior fire attack was started, but firefighters were met with heavy flames and very low visibility inside. A partial roof collapse occurred during firefighting operations, but there were no injuries.
After the fire was extinguished, YFD personnel remained on the scene for several hours watching for hot spots and flair ups.
The residence sustained heavy damage, and will not be able to be reoccupied. The fire was contained to the single residence, and neighboring properties were not damaged. There were no injuries reported, and the two adult tenants of the home were not present when the fire occurred.
Eight dogs were home at the time of the fire. One of the dogs that was rescued from the home needed the immediate attention of firefighters, and was given oxygen via a mask designed to be used with animals. The mask was part of a “Fido Bag” that had been donated to the Yuma Fire Department. YFD has received donations of both “Fido Bags” and “Wag N O2 Fur Life Bags” from Desert Veterinary Clinic, the Yuma Kennel Club, and the “Fetch Foundation.”
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, although it does not appear to have been intentionally set.
