Yuma, Arizona - A scam that was reported by the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office a few weeks ago has made its way into the city.

The caller will say they are from the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office and that there is a warrant out for your arrest.  The scammer will then tell the victim that they need to pay via pre-paid cards or they will be arrested.  The caller will tell you to go purchase a “green dot” or similar pre-paid cards and will ask for you to give them the numbers off the cards.  It has been reported that they will tell you that the card is invalid and you need to buy more cards.  Victims are losing thousands of dollars from this scam.  The scammers even have a voice message saying they are from the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.

Please be advised that neither the Yuma Police Department nor the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office will:

  • Call and request any sort of payment over the phone for warrants, fines, fees, bonds, etc.
  • Ask for credit card information over the phone.
  • Call and give warrant information to the public over the phone.
  • When in doubt, ask the caller for a contact name and phone number for verification.
