Trnava, Slovakia - Despite not yet stepping on the mat officially for Arizona State, redshirt freshman and Phoenix-native Chad Porter will represent the United States this week on Team USA's Greco-Roman team at Junior World Championships.
In June, Porter won the 97 kg spot at Junior Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Indianapolis. After earning a bye in the quarterfinals, Porter wrestled his way through the semis, finals, and best-of-three championship series.
In the final series, Porter defeated Oklahoma State's Austin Harris in the first two matches to earn the spot.
To open Junior World Championships, Porter will face Illia Laurynovich of Belarus with the winner facing the winner of Hendrik Kalme (Estonia)/Delian Hos Alishahi (Bulgaria).
Junior World Championships span the entire week but Greco-Roman competition will finish by Wednesday evening. The schedule for Porter's weight class is as follows:
Tuesday, Sept. 18
10:30 am local (1:30 am AZ time) – Qualification rounds (Greco-Roman 60 kg, 67 kg, 72 kg, 82 kg, 97 kg)
5:15 pm local (8:30 am AZ time) – Semifinals (same weight classes)
Wednesday, Sept. 19
10:30 am local (1:30 am AZ time) – Repechage/Wrestlebacks
6 pm local (9 am AZ time) – Finals
