Washington, DC - Secretary Kerry spoke by phone with UN Special Envoy Ould Cheikh Ahmed today and expressed the United States’ continued support for the UN-led Yemen peace negotiations, highlighting that these talks are the best opportunity to bring an end to the conflict.

Secretary Kerry and the Special Envoy reviewed recent developments and welcomed the government delegation’s acceptance of the latest UN proposal. They also noted the need for the Houthi-General People’s Congress to constructively engage with the UN and the international community to reach agreement and to bring this war to an end.

Additionally, both the Secretary and UN Special Envoy reaffirmed the need for both parties to abide by the existing ceasefire, noting that the Yemeni people have suffered for too long and deserve a lasting peace.

Finally, the Secretary expressed his appreciation for the Emir and Government of Kuwait’s steadfast support for the negotiations. He thanked the UN Special Envoy for his dedication and hard work, and reiterated the United States’ strong support for his ongoing efforts.
