FTC and States Combat Fraudulent Charities That Falsely Claim to Help Veterans and Servicemembers

Washington, DC - The Federal Trade Commission, along with law enforcement officials and charity regulators from 70 offices in every state, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam and Puerto Rico, announced more than 100 actions and a consumer education initiative in “Operation Donate with Honor,” a crackdown on fraudulent charities that con consumers by falsely promising their donations will help veterans and servicemembers.

Going Back to Work after Retiring

Washington, DC - Dear Rusty: I am 63 ½ and I am officially retiring from my job on August 1 because I’m physically unable to do the work anymore.  I have qualified for a pension from work and I also want to start receiving my Social Security benefits.  What happens if I choose to go back to work full time or part time in the future?  Do I continue to receive Social Security?  Do I lose anything if this happens?  Or have I just frozen my benefits at the current rate?  Signed: Retiring Soon

Five Charged for Elder Fraud Schemes

New York - Five U.S. individuals were charged today and yesterday for their roles in three separate elder fraud schemes.  The schemes collectively defrauded tens of thousands of Americans, many of whom were elderly, out at least a hundred million dollars.  Four defendants were charged in the Eastern District of New York, the other was charged in Southern District of Florida.
