Phoenix, Arizona - Highlighting the need for additional capacity to provide long-term care for Arizona veterans, especially in rural parts of the state, Governor Doug Ducey Friday asked the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to prioritize the construction of new Arizona State Veteran Homes. In a letter to Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, Governor Ducey referenced two planned facilities in rural areas for which state funds have been appropriated, but that await matching dollars from the VA.

Phoenix, Arizona - As part of efforts to help ex-offenders successfully re-enter society, Arizona is partnering with Uber on an “Uber for Jobs” pilot program. The initiative, which will be funded through a $5,000 donation from Uber and equal match from the state, is designed to offer former inmates rides to verified employment events such as a job interview or first day of work.

Washington, DC - For the first time, scientists have found a connection between abnormalities in how the brain breaks down glucose and the severity of the signature amyloid plaques and tangles in the brain, as well as the onset of eventual outward symptoms, of Alzheimer’s disease. The study was supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, and appears in the November 6, 2017, issue of Alzheimer's & Dementia: the Journal of the Alzheimer's Association.

Washington, DC - The United States and China convened their second nuclear smuggling consultation on November 9th in Shanghai to reaffirm their joint commitment and continued resolve to counter the threat of nuclear terrorism. The consultation was the culmination of a weeklong engagement, beginning with a tour highlighting the operations of the radiation detection system at the Port of Yangshan and a scenario-based policy discussion focused on U.S. and Chinese response to a fictional smuggling scenario.
