Washington, DC - President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint the following individuals to key Administration posts:

  • Meghan Flanz – Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Carla A. Harris – Chairperson, National Women’s Business Council
  • H. Fisk Johnson – Member, Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations
  • Mark Tercek – Member, Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations
  • Joshua Bolten – Member, United States Holocaust Memorial Council
  • Stuart Levey – Member, United States Holocaust Memorial Council

President Obama said, “I am confident that these experienced and hardworking individuals will help us tackle the important challenges facing America, and I am grateful for their service.  I look forward to working with them.”

President Obama announced his intent to appoint the following individuals to key Administration posts: 

Meghan Flanz, Appointee for Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs    

Meghan Flanz is Deputy General Counsel for Legal Operations and Accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a position she has held since 2015.  Ms. Flanz was Counselor to the General Counsel and Executive Director of the Office of Accountability Review from 2014 to 2015.  She served at the VA as Senior Advisor to the General Counsel for Strategic Planning in 2014, Associate General Counsel for Strategic Planning and Education from 2009 to 2014, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Labor-Management Relations from 2006 to 2009, and as Senior Attorney for Labor and Employment from 2001 to 2006.  Before joining the VA, she served as a Litigation Associate and Senior Litigation Associate in private practice from 1986 to 2001.  Ms. Flanz received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and a J.D. from Loyola Marymount University School of Law.

Carla A. Harris, Appointee for Chairperson, National Women’s Business Council

Carla A. Harris is the Vice Chairman of Global Wealth Management, Managing Director, and Senior Client Advisor at Morgan Stanley, a position she has held since 2013.  Ms. Harris was first appointed by President Obama as Chair of the National Women's Business Council in 2013.  From 2009 to 2012, she was the head of Morgan Stanley’s Emerging Manager Platform.  From 1991 to 2008, Ms. Harris was a senior member of the firm’s Equity Syndicate desk, responsible for Equity Private Placements and led their retail and consumer capital markets effort from 2003 to 2008.  Ms. Harris served as Chair of the Private Placement Commitment Equity Committee from 1995 to 2005.  She began her career with Morgan Stanley in the Mergers & Acquisitions department in 1987.  Ms. Harris received an A.B. from Harvard University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

H. Fisk Johnson, Appointee for Member, Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations

H. Fisk Johnson is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc.  Dr. Johnson is a Director of The Consumer Goods Forum, and Trustee Emeritus of Cornell University.  In addition, he has served as a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and a Director of Conservation International.  He was first appointed to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations in 2002 and re-appointed in 2011.  Dr. Johnson holds a B.S., M.Eng, M.S., Ph.D., and M.B.A from Cornell University.          

Mark Tercek, Appointee for Member, Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations

Mark Tercek is President and CEO of The Nature Conservancy, a position he has held since 2008.  From 1984 to 2008, Mr. Tercek held various roles at Goldman Sachs, including Partner and Managing Director, leading the firm’s Center for Environmental Markets and Environmental Strategy group.  He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Resources for the Future.  Mr. Tercek currently serves as a member on the Board of Trustees of Williams College. Mr. Tercek received a B.A. from Williams College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Joshua Bolten, Appointee for Member, United States Holocaust Memorial Council

Joshua Bolten is Co-Founder and Managing Director of Rock Creek Global Advisors, positions he has held since 2011.  Mr. Bolten was a Visiting Professor at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs from 2009 to 2011.  He served at the White House as Chief of Staff from 2006 to 2009, Director of the Office of Management and Budget from 2003 to 2006, and Deputy Chief of Staff from 2001 to 2003.  Mr. Bolten was Executive Director for Legal and Government Affairs at Goldman Sachs International in London from 1994 to 1999.  He also served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs at the White House from 1992 to 1993 and as General Counsel to the United States Trade Representative from 1989 to 1992.  Previously, Mr. Bolten worked as International Trade Counsel to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee from 1985 to 1989.  He was first appointed to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 2009.  Mr. Bolten received an A.B. from Princeton University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

Stuart Levey, Appointee for Member, United States Holocaust Memorial Council

Stuart Levey is Chief Legal Officer and Group Managing Director at HSBC Holdings plc, positions he has held since 2012.  Mr. Levey was a Senior Fellow for National Security and Financial Integrity at the Council on Foreign Relations in 2011.  He was Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Department of Treasury from 2004 to 2011.  Mr. Levey served in various capacities at the U.S. Department of Justice from 2001 to 2004, including as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General, Associate Deputy Attorney General, and Chief of Staff of the Deputy Attorney General.  He was a Partner at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin LLP from 1996 to 2000, as well as an Associate from 1990 to 1996.  Mr. Levey received an A.B. from Harvard College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
