Wellton, Arizona - Members of the community of Wellton, Bureau of Reclamation, Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation & Drainage District (WMIDD) and Arizona Western College broke ground on the multi-million dollar Wellton Learning Center. The group of dignitaries and officials gathered at the future site of the educational facility.
The site is located on the southwest corner of E. County 12th Street (William Street) and S. Avenue 29 E.
The land was made available to the community through a transfer from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, facilitated by the Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation & Drainage District. On April 15, 2010, the WMIDD and Bureau of Reclamation signed a lease agreement to allow the eventual development of the Wellton Community Complex. The Complex will include the AWC Center; a new elementary school; and a municipal park.
The Wellton Learning Center is the final project in the $74 million bond measure approved by voters in 2004. The College Community Center (3C), the Barcomb Agriculture and Science Complex and Dr. Kathryn A. Watson Child Development Learning Lab were part of that bond measure funding, as were both Quartzsite and Parker Learning Centers.
Arizona Western College services a 10,000 square mile district in both Yuma and LaPaz Counties, with facilities in San Luis, Yuma, MCAS Yuma, Quartzsite and Parker.
