Yuma, Arizona - The Upward Bound program at AWC will be holding their 6th grade “Come to College” activity on Thursday, September 6th.

The program will be bringing 6th graders from Parker, Wellton, Gila Vista and 4th
Avenue to explore the college campus.  Students will do a scavenger hunt with College students from an education class and will spend an hour with coaches and players in the gym.  This is the first of six years of activities focused to expose students to college and careers.

On November 8th, approximately 55 Upward Bound students from Yuma, Kofa, Cibola, San Luis and Parker high schools will be having a community service day. The students will be volunteering and assisting Saddles of Joy, Yuma Food Bank/Habitat for Humanity and the City of Yuma at the Children’s Festival. All of the students are interested in giving back to their community. The students will be meeting at Sanguinitti Memorial Park at 9:00 am and will disperse to their various assignments that will take place from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. After 1:00 pm the students will meet back at the park for lunch and to share their experiences.

The students that participate in the Upward Bound program belong to a federal grant program that assists them to prepare for college.  They join as a 9th or 10th graders and stay in the program throughout their high school years, including spending 6 weeks in a residential, academic camp each year at the AWC campus.
