Yuma, Arizona - Yuma Mayor Larry Nelson has been recognized for the City of Yuma’s efforts on the issues of immigration reform and military relations.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors named Nelson as co-chair of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Task Force and the Community/Military Relations Task Force, according to separate letters signed by Miami Mayor Manuel A. Diaz, president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

On the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Task Force, Nelson will serve with task force Chair Phil Gordon, who is the Mayor of Phoenix.  On the Community/Military Relations Task Force, Nelson will serve with Chair Mark Begich, who is Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska.

The lead conference staff for each task force will be in contact with Nelson soon “to discuss priority issues,” Diaz wrote.

Both task forces pertain to issues at the forefront in Yuma.  Nelson maintains regular contact with commanders of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and Yuma Proving Ground.  MCAS-Yuma conducts training missions inside the Yuma city limits at least annually, and many stationed at or employed by both facilities live inside Yuma city limits.  And Yuma’s proximity to Mexico and activity by the U.S. Border Patrol, as well as Arizona measures to punish businesses who knowingly employ illegal aliens, keep immigration issues on the front burner here.
