Yuma, Arizona - The City of Yuma invites residents to attend and participate during an Open House on the development of the City of Yuma Bicycle Facility Plan. The Open House will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 16, in Room 190 of Yuma City Hall, One City Plaza (between 1st and Madison avenues at Giss Parkway).  There will be a brief presentation planned for 5:30 p.m.

A consultant for the City, Olsson and Associates, has prepared a proposed bicycle network for public review.  Attendees may review the proposal during the Open House.  A discussion will be held on the vision for a draft plan, incorporating input gathered during a meeting of stakeholders held in March.

The City of Yuma Bicycle Facility Plan is a policy document adopted by the City Council for construction and placement of bikeways.  The bicycle facility plan is updated periodically in response to increasing or changing needs for bicycle facilities.  The primary goal of establishing a bicycle transportation system is to improve the mobility of people and goods throughout the city of Yuma by providing a convenient, efficient, effective, accessible and safe alternative system for transportation and recreation. The City has three types of bicycle facilities: bike paths, bike lanes, and bike routes.

In preparation for the update of the City of Yuma Bicycle Facility Plan, a public survey was completed in the spring of 2007.  A planning consultant was hired and stakeholder meetings were held in March 2008. The project is scheduled for completion and adoption by the City of Yuma City Council this coming fall.

The March meeting identified several key values involved in the drafting of a new plan as well as outlining several goals for the plan.  The values included safety, convenience and accessibility, plus connectivity and information.

Four goals identified included creating a system of biking facilities that was safe for different types of users and riders; providing and maintaining an attractive, diverse, and accessible system of bicycle facilities that serves residents’ needs; developing a plan to locate bike facilities in a manner that links them to homes, schools, parks, work places and other areas of interest; and promoting public awareness of bicycle-related opportunities, laws and regulations.
