Yuma, Arizona - This afternoon shortly before 4:00 pm a fire was reported at the back of a house in the 100 block of South 22nd Avenue. Yuma Fire Department personnel arriving on the scene found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of 153 South 22nd Avenue. The fire had reportedly started in the backyard near the rear of the home.

The resident attempted to fight the fire with fire extinguishers but it quickly spread in the yard and to the house.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, but significant damage was done to the residence and contents. The fire also spread into neighboring yards but was stopped before it could ignite adjoining homes. The home was not able to be re-occupied and the American Red Cross was called to provide assistance to the residence’s 3 occupants.

Fire investigators are on the scene and the cause is still under investigation.
