Yuma, Arizona - Yesterday the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a scam from a victim in the Foothills. The Female victim, 80 years of age, had received a telephone caller from an unknown suspect who had told her there was a package in her name being held in customs. The victim was told the package contained a large amount of cash but she needed to send $1800 plus a $150 processing fee to the Dominican Republic in order to secure the package through customs. The victim sent the money. This was a scam. The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public to be extremely vigilant when receiving unsolicited mail or phone calls informing them they have won a prize or have money coming to them. A usual warning sign of a scam is that the caller requires payment in order to send the prize or money. Most of the time, these scammers ask the victim to send the money via wire, which can then be picked up any where in the world without record. |
