Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced that it will host the 2nd Annual Desert Classic ’08 Basketball Tournament this Thursday and Friday, November 13th and 14th at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus. The tournament-presented by Chicago Title and National Bank of Arizona-will bring six top basketball teams from around the Mountain, Central and Eastern time zones to join the two Matadors’ basketball teams for a two-day, eight-game tournament. The action will start at 1:30PM each day and continue all the way through the afternoon and evening.

The men’s side of the schedule will feature teams from as close as the Phoenix area, and as far away as Delaware and South Carolina. The host Matadors-who are ranked 25th in the NJCAA Preseason Poll-will play their first game of the tournament Thursday night at 7:30PM against Delaware Technical & Community College from Newark, Delaware-one of four different campuses under the DTCC umbrella. Those two teams will be joined by Scottsdale Community College from the Phoenix area and Clinton Junior College from Rock Hill, South Carolina, who will begin their participation in the tournament against each other at 3:30PM Thursday afternoon. On Friday, the four teams will swap opponents, with Scottsdale and Delaware Tech facing each other at 3:30PM, and the Matadors wrapping up tournament action at 7:30PM against Clinton.

On the women’s side, the AWC Lady Matadors-who are ranked 29th in the NJCAA Preseason Poll-will kick off the home side of their 2008-09 regular season schedule as part of Desert Classic ’08 Thursday afternoon at 5:30PM against Phoenix College (in a game that will not count in the ACCAC Conference standings, but will count in the overall records). Meanwhile, the other two women’s teams in the tournament, Mesa Community College from the Phoenix area and Owens Community College from Toledo, Ohio, will actually kick off the tournament itself facing each other in a 1:30PM tipoff Thursday. Like the men, the women’s teams will swap opponents on Friday, with Mesa and Phoenix commencing Friday’s action at 1:30PM (also in a non-conference matchup), and the Lady Matadors taking on Owens at 5:30PM.

All eight games will be played at ‘The House’ on the AWC Campus, and admission prices are as follows: $5 admission for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12. These prices are for each day’s action, meaning that it is a one-time fee to see all four games each day (in other words, adults can watch all eight games for $10).
